Courses for self sufficiency and smallholders.
Courses for self sufficiency and wannabe smallholders.
Smallholdings or the land to create or work a smallholding don't come cheap and many people looking for a smallholding as a way of either partly or fully getting away from the rat race and living as self sufficient as possible, often find themselves without the knowledge to even utilise their own back yard or garden for self sufficiency techniques, ways and means such as growing your own veggies and keeping livestock or poultry for food, producing electricity and heat via solar power, wind or water turbines, the list and varieties are endless. BUT with so many courses available, if you are going for it or just considering the options, a course or multiple courses, could be worth you seriously looking at whether you actually have the official smallholding size plot or simply want to learn more about working with nature a wee bit more and actually trying the self sufficiency thing.

If you're a modern 'Greenshifter' looking to move to a more rural location with an acre or two, an outbuilding or three and plenty of space to keep livestock for food, maybe you are a city or town dweller, happy where you are and want to utilise a small plot to keep some chucks for the eggs, goats for cheese and milk, maybe you fancy a polytunnel for growing tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, plants and flowers, creating compost and natural fertiliser but you are not sure how to et started, bees and honey are popular, fish and chick breeding are also high on the lists, then a smallholing course may be right up your street and surprisingly inexpensive.
Smallholding courses are in big demand nowadays and the areas of tuition available will probably surprise you and where better to go than to other self sufficient and skilled smallholders and small producers of food and crops who know the ropes and wear the t-shirt of experience and knowledge. |
| With so many 'course providers' out there, you are spoilt for choice and can easily buy a day, half a day, a week or more course on learning hands on about raising and keeping poultry, pigs and cattle, how to erect and utilise a polytunnel, start producing your own energy and heat through solar power and wind or water powered generators, produce crops and plantations for selling or for personal self sufficiency.
The great thing about learning hands on rather than going to college or night school, is you get a real taste of what you are learning and it will generally give you a real insight on what you are being taught. If you have a small plot you want to utilise, maybe you could try finding someone else with a small plot who can show you the ropes for a small fee. Knowledge and experience is paramount and worth it's weight in gold, so once you get the basics under your belt the rest will follow, even if you are looking for very technical and advanced tuition hands on, there are courses out there to suit most peoples requirements.
